If you've put together your own website design or just finished having a professional web design created, the next step is to turn the design into a functioning website. The bare minimum that you'll need is an HTML and CSS framework, but depending on the amount of information that you need to display as well as the desired functionality and appearance, additional development work may be needed. However, no matter what the needs of your specific situation may be, Don Schaefer can help guide you in the right direction. Best of all, once the whole project is finished, a content management system can be installed that will allow you to quickly and easily edit your site without needing to know a single bit of code!
There are a number of ways that a website design can be converted into working HTML and CSS, but just like the building of a house or a car, there are ways to get the job done & then there are ways to do the job right. Rather than taking short cuts, Don Schaefer carefully plans out the best way to convert designs to HTML and CSS. As a result, the website being developed not only retains its originally intended aesthetic in all the major browsers, but also maximizes its functional flexibility and capitalizes on search optimization opportunities in the site's information architecture and naming conventions.
While small 5-10 page sites can utilize a static horizontal navigation and slightly larger 10-20 page sites can get by with a vertically-based navigation (or a combination of both), drop-down navigations remain one of the most user-friendly and intuitive ways for users to navigate larger sites without getting lost in the process. Although they do take some extra effort to create and style properly, a drop down navigation is included at no additional charge for any website development project with 15 or more pages involved.
Everyone has seen those convenient email links (i.e. "email info@acme.com) on websites that you can simply click and have your default email program open a new message to the individual or company. What they don't know is that those links actually end up generating more inbound spam for their owners. Spammers have developed software that will scan the internet for pages that contain email addresses (either on the "front" of a web page where it's visible to users or in the HTML source code) which they then collect & use to send out spam. Additionally, these links don't always open an email client as intended, leaving users with the choice of either finding a different way to contact you or finding someone else to do business with. Creating an online contact form (whether in ASP, C#, PHP, or another programming language) solves both of these problems.
While I would not recommend Flash-based solutions for clients targeting iPhone or iPad users, and I never recommend it as an all-encompassing way to build a website, Flash remains a powerful tool for providing enhanced interactivity to over 90% of all internet users. When used in conjunction with other HTML-based content, Flash applications can provide users with media or information in ways that wouldn't otherwise be possible without negatively impacting a site's ability to rank well in search engines. Whether you're looking to have a custom-designed video player, a photo gallery that can be easily updated via XML, or another type of Flash application developed for your website, Don Schaefer can assist you.
While some people don't mind paying extra to have the person or company who developed their site go back in and make periodic updates, others like to make the updates themselves... especially if the updates are frequent. This is where a "CMS" or Content Management System comes into play. Content management systems allow users the ability to easily edit certain areas of a website that have been designated as editable by the web developer. While I have not developed my own content management system, I can integrate a 3rd-party system that will allow you the same functionality, provide you with training on how to use it, and even show you how you can easily make updates to your website directly from an iPhone!
