A necessity for any size business, graphic design encompasses a handfull of skillsets (visual art, typography & page layout) and is utilized in several different ways (most commonly logos, website design, branding, publications, advertisements and product packaging). From the moment you need to design your first business card or logo, graphic design comes into play. Admittedly, there are templates out there for just about everything from business cards to websites, but if you want your materials to help you stand out, you need a professional's touch. Another thing that many people don't consider when having graphic work done is the format the work is done in. There is a BIG difference between "raster" images and "vector" images, and if you don't take this difference into consideration, you may end up paying for it later. In short, "raster" images are images that get pixelated or jagged as they're made larger (such as those you might take with your digital camera), while "vector" images are created based on mathmatical equations so that when the image is enlarged, it stays just as sharp and precise looking as it was at a smaller size. While raster images are almost the only type of images you'll find used on websites, they're rarely used in print design unless they're saved at an extremely high resolution (to prevent image degredation when printing). This is an important consideration because if you're having a logo or some other graphic designed that you might end up wanting to print on a magazine ad, banner, or billboard, you'll need to make sure that you have it designed in vector format or you'll likely end up needing to have it recreated as a vector image later!
A logo is perhaps the single most important graphic you'll invest in & it represents your company on every card, brochure, advertisement, website and billboard you put out. As a result, you'll want to make sure that it's done in vector format by a professional so that it can be resized for any purpose as-needed down the road. Icons on the otherhand, while aesthetically similar, serve an entirely different purpose. The use of icons, whether on a website or magazine advertisement, adds an extra level of professionalism while simultaneously communicating a concise message in a visually appealing way.
"Graphics" come in a variety of forms and can range from anything as simple as a photograph, to a 3d rendering, to a complex collage of work complete with special effects added to it. Graphics serve the important purpose of gaining and maintaining the attention of viewers while a message is being conveyed to them. Whether you need to have graphics added/integrated to your website (either for the site itself, or perhaps an online banner/advertisement you're creating), or you're looking to have a graphics created for a brochure that you're looking to have produced in the near future, Don Schaefer can help.
The world of print design spans across business cards, brochures, flyers, presentation folders, magazine ads, banners, billboards and a number of other popular methods of traditional advertising. While a professional graphic designer like Don Schaefer can help you accomplish any of these tasks, there are a few things you'll want to consider if you decide to attempt them yourself. First of all, you'll want to use "CMYK" (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key/Black) color mode in your graphics editor of choice, as this will give you a truer representation of the colors that will be printed because it is based on the 4 colors of ink that are most commonly used in printing. Additionally, you'll want to make sure that your design includes necessary "bleed" areas. "Bleed" areas are essentially margins-of-error around the exterior edge of a design that help the printer allow for printing inconsistencies.
