Miscellaneous Resources

Some things are just SO good that you can't help but spread the word. These resources may not be related to websites, but I guarantee they're worth looking at!

  • ESV Study Bible - The entirety of God's innerrant Word & the single most important resource for our lives, complete with study notes, full-color maps, illustrations, charts, timelines and articles by a number of evangelical Christian scholars. Alternatively, if you're looking for a study bible geared more towards Christian apologetics (the defense of the Christian faith through the use of systematic reason and logic), the Apologetics Study Bible is a great resource with a number of essays by leading apologists that help readers overcome some of the toughest questions/objections regarding the Christian faith.
  • Grace Walk - A study of the truth found in Galatians 3:3 and probably the 2nd most influential book on my Christian life after the Bible itself. In it, author Steve McVey explores what it means for Christians to let Christ live through them, the freedoms that they'll experience as a result, and the process of navigating the roadblocks to those freedoms.
  • eSword - Free Bible study software that provides a wide range of features that you would normally pay hundreds for. It offers a number of translations, study notes, comparison tools, definitions, search capabilities, note-taking and organizational functions, maps, charts, and a lot more!
  • OpenOffice - A 100% Free Open-source alternative to most of the programs offered in "Microsoft Office". This software even offers the ability to read files created in "Microsoft Office" AND create files that can be opened by "Microsoft Office", such as ".doc" or ".xls" files.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - A free alternative to Microsoft Outlook for POP3 and IMAP email accounts. Note however, that in order to obtain calander/task/reminder functionality, you'll need to install the Thunderbird "Lightening" plugin.
  • AVG Free Anti-Virus - A solid anti-virus solution that protects your computer every bit as well as (if not better than) Norton or McAfee Anti-virus products, but without the price tag. Added bonuses: schedule scans, get less pop-ups and enjoy the fact that your computer won't run as slowly during virus scans as it will with Norton or McAfee.
  • Avira Free Antivirus - Another solid anti-virus solution that's a bit newer to the mix. Avira offers great protection, some nice features, and will probably use the least computer resources of any of the major antivirus products during scans.
  • Comodo Free Firewall & Antivirus - In addition to the antivirus software, Comodo's firewall software gives you the ability to control what programs on your computer can send information out to the internet as well as what internet applications can access the information on your computer.
  • Picasa - A great program for organizing digital photo collections. Entirely Free.
  • Paint.Net - Once included on Windows installations as an upgraded version of Microsoft Paint program, this software is still available free for download & offers a lot of enhancements over Paint while remaining easy to use for the casual user.
  • Jing - Free program that allows you to make short videos of what you see on your computer monitor, as well as do a few other nice things.
  • Boxee - Kind of like a free version of Netflix, Boxee searches popular online video services (such as Hulu, YouTube, etc.) for television and movie content and displays it full-screen on your desktop. While the selection is limited compared to Netflix and sometimes includes links to videos that you need to pay for, it's still worth a try.
  • Koyote Free Video Converter - A great video converter that handles a wide range of popular audio and video formats including .mp4 and the hard-to-find .ogg theora format
  • File Renamer Basic - If you ever need to rename a ton of files at the same time, this handy software will let you do so easily with a suprisingly level of options.
  • 7-Zip - Free file archiving software with a high compression ratio that can compress to an impressive number of different file formats.
  • Digsby - Free all-in-one instant messaging to AOL, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, Google, Facebook, and a range of other popular chat services.
  • Skype - Free service that offers phone calls, video chat, and instant messaging.
